In Plain Sight: is this a joke?

So I thought maybe I'd check out this show, it's not getting the world's worst reviews (it's certainly getting better reviews than "The Cleaner").

And then, in the episode I watched, there was a catfight on the front lawn (at a wake) between a female US Marshal (the main character) and a female cop/detective.   Are you fucking kidding me?  LAME, LAME, LAME and soooo unrealistic.

Give me a break.

First TV casualty

Chuck, it's time to say goodbye. I liked your pilot episode quite a bit. You had Adam Baldwin. You should've worked for me. Alas, you do not. Here is why:

* I think Zachary Levi is adorable, but I have major problems with his character. If he's so smart, why is he so stupid?

* The best friend is neither funny nor endearing. I see no reason for him to be there, other than Chuck needs to have a best friend. He deserves a better one.

* Not feeling the whole sister/Captain Awesome thing. When Captain Awesome teaches Chuck how to tango, it is obvious that he's leading. Ruins the "I learned the girl part" joke later.

* Also, tango? Who tangos at an art auction? If this was supposed to be a sly wink at True Lies, it didn't work. Contrivance!

* It is as though the friends and family part of Chuck's life needs to be there, but wasn't thoroughly thought through. Every time they're on screen, I'm bored.

* The rest of the Nerd Herd had potential, but is limited to played out weirdo/hot girl geek action jokes. Meh.

So, it's a shame, Chuck, but you fail to keep me interested and entertained. As for Adam Baldwin, I'll always have Firefly.

Friday night premiere: Moonlight.

Ugh. I thought this sucked. Lame voiceover. Bad dialogue. Stiff acting. Thought the reporter was the worst offender, and looks as if she becomes the main vampire's girlfriend. Lame. Lame. Lame.

Sure, "Logan Echolls" (VM shoutout) was a psuedo bright spot. But he didn't have much to do and I liked him a LOT more on VM playing a role in which he was a secretly wounded behind his asshole exterior attitude. Don't think that's going to be the case here.

Also thought it was totally lame how they decided to rewrite all the (centuries old!!!) vampire lore. That really wasn't necessary considering the show is distinguishing itself from the past just by sucking so badly.

I don't plan to watch it again. Delete!

Mad Men: Not for me.

I guess I already knew the '50s really wasn't my favorite era... but for me to love a show that is this macho focused, there have to be a lot of other redeeming factors and I really didn't see any here.

Icky men hitting on subordinate women in the workplace; icky visits to the OB/GYN who makes condescending, sexist comments; icky relationships that all seem bizarre.

There wasn't a single happy, content person on the entire show.  I mean, sometimes you just need one...

Eh.  Not so much!  But maybe you liked it better...

What About Brian: Season Two.

Carrie said her sister refers to this show as "What About Boring?" and I have to admit: it's just NOT a good show. That said, I had nothing else to do on Monday nights since I couldn't commit to Heroes (on which I liked only ONE character) and I needed a way to wind down when I got home (I work late on Mondays), so sometime mid-season I caught up online and I wound up watching the season through to its end.

For some totally illogical and not even making any sense reason, whenever I would say to myself, oh is there a new episode of WAB on my DVR, I would think "oh it's time to go watch the show where characters from other shows have all gone to die" as it seems it has an overabundance of "recognizable" actors (compared to most other nightly dramas, although compared to say, Brothers & Sisters, it's probably actually got less).

I never think of any of the characters as their actual names on this show. There's Brian who I call "Seventh Heaven". There's Ivy, who was Megan on Felicity (and I think of her as "Felicity" even tho that wasn't her character's name). There was another Felicity appearance when "Julie" from the first couple seasons played one of Brian's psycho ex-girlfriends. There was "Madison" from Everwood who played "Marjorie" in season 1 and parts of season 2 here. And I have to say, the rest of the season suffered without her, once she left, all the dramatic tension between Brian and Adam was gone and the show became even stupider than it already was. There's Tiffany Amber Thiesen, a veteran of so many other shows (90210, 2Guys A girl and whatever, Sunshine Miami and of course Saved by the Bell). [added:] And Also Ross' first wife "Carol" (Friends) was on an episode!!

The only two characters whose storyline I was really involved in were Dave and Deena. Dave being of course the creepy short dude from Six Feet Under, right? But the season finale, where they wind up having sex in a field full of cows? Ugh.

I can't imagine this show will be renewed for next year. But somehow I guess I found it entertaining enough to wind down to for an hour, even if I thought it was badly written, badly acted, and really kinda stupid. What can I say, sometimes I am easily entertained! Or: If I don't expect much at all from you, then you can't really disappoint me the way you can when I expect a lot out of you. Right? Yeah, let's go with that explanation.

Guilty.

So last night's House totally veered from their normal formula.  Instead of focusing on one mysterious medical case and the team's efforts to crack it, the story revolved around House's dealings with a rape victim and Cameron's attempts to help a dying man. I did NOT like this episode. The scenes between House and the victim didn't ring true and I'm getting sick of the whole "let's try and get House to learn about humanity" crap. Blecch.

I *do* want to see House connect with someone, and let his guard down, but it seemed really contrived in this episode.

Now. For my guilty confessions:

Men in Trees - It's actually becoming one of my favorite shows.  Anne Heche is FUNNY!  Justine Bateman is too cool! The boys are super cute! And they're in Alaska.  Yes, I know it seems like it's been done before (hello, Northern Exposure?) but it's different. It's quirky and cute and I'm totally hooked.

Dirt - Courteney Cox's new show on FX.  It's totally trashy. The first episode was so racy that I couldn't believe it was on regular TV, and every episode has tons of gratuitous, explicit sex, and sometimes extreme violence. Basically everyone on the show is in this horrible downward spiral of excess and greed, I'm still not sure that I like it, but I can't stop watching it because I want to see what happens next. Has anyone else seen this? I'm curious to hear what you think.  I do think it's gotten better since the first episode (it was pretty bad)...

American Idol - The auditions are on right now.  Even if you hate American Idol, you need to watch at least ONE audition episode - not to see the crazy weirdos who think they're going to be stars, but to watch Paula Abdul's antics. She is definitely on some major painkillers this season...

My Second Reality Show?

Are you going to watch Top Design? I haven't decided if I am yet. I'm a big Project Runway fan, but I could never get into Top Chef. Perhaps because I can see the fashions, but can't taste the food? Maybe interior design will make for better TV.

I could be venturing forth into my second reality tv show. It's a slippery slope, my friends, a slippery slope. I'm afraid I'm going to be joining Michelle in her love of The Amazing Race or Survivor next. Yikes.

A Few Random Bits.

So. how did you feel about the resolution to the House vs. Mean Detective drama on Tuesday's House? I have mixed feelings.

What I liked:  Cameron's attitude towards House.  Mean Detective's refusal to give in. The ending, where it became evident that House was still an ass.

What I didn't like: For once, the medical storyline bothered me a little. I usually don't care if the medical situations are unrealistic, but electroshock therapy to erase his experiential memory?  And then it was a mistake? Um.  That seemed too ridiculous even for House. And super cheesy scenes with House in rehab -- ick.  Robert Sean Leonard is starting to get on my nerves.

It was definitely a strange episode.  I'm just glad that that whole storyline has come to an end...I like my House better when he doesn't have a jail sentence hanging over his head.

In other news, did you hear that Chase and Cameron are engaged in REAL LIFE? Yay.

I also watched Friday Night Lights last week for the first time, and I liked it. I need to watch the previous episodes online, but I definitely think I'm going to add it to the Tivo schedule.

And.  Is anyone else watching Men in Trees after Grey's Anatomy?  I actually like it! Anne Heche is extremely likable.  Although, since it's set in Alaska, when Jacob sat down and watched a few minutes with me, he asked, "Is this a lumberjack soap opera?" Ha.

Summer TV.

Sunday:

Brotherhood.  Pretty violent for a Sunday night; it's the perfect "return to work" mood changer.  I am oddly fascinated by both the Caffee brothers although I think they both have some tiny tweak to them that makes them not that cute, yet still magnetic.  The dope-smokin', cheatin', seemingly goody-two-shoes wife is the storyline that's going to blow this shit up.  Can't wait!

Monday

Closer.  I love this show.  LOVE LOVE LOVE this show.  Also, really love Jon Tenney and since he was married to Teri Hatcher before, I'm thinking I have a chance (ha!).   Every episode it gets better.  Last night was so dramatic!  I'm hooked.

Saved. Super predictable.  Scruffy anti-hero.  Pal with secret life.  Ex-girlfriend.  Yet somehow...it's still entertaining.  Oddly, given my predilection for the clean-shaven types, I am enjoying the ultra scruffy messiness of Tom Scott here.  Since I work late on Mondays, I usually wind up watching this on Tuesdays.  Which is good because it helps spread the week out a bit!  What is it about ERs and ambulances that is so fascinating?  That they're a place we all hope never to spend time in but want to know what goes on in our absence?

Tuesday:

Rescue Me.  What a trainwreck.  A trainwreck I can't tear my eyes away from.  Equal parts totally silly versus totally crass and nasty.  It's the Clerks/Kevin Smith phenomenon.  I generally hate Denis Leary but I can't turn this shit off.

Wednesday:

Project Runway.  Doh.  As you should already know from reading this site, it's the first season/time I'm watching it, yet I'm totally hooked.

p.s. on Wednesdays I also watch One Tree Hill reruns. What a suckass show. Yet since it knocked my beloved Everwood out of the Fall lineup (and off TV forever, waah waah), I feel I must learn to love it.  I'm trying.

Thursday:

Windfall.  Another badly written, badly acted show, but I am watching it anyway.  I HATE the Sean/Tally/Zoey story line that just drags on and on.  I liked Frankie and Damian at first, but they seem to be going down the toilet as well.  Still enjoy watching Jason Gedrick and Luke Perry.  Both cute.  Both messed up (on the show) and unable to find success (in real life).  Both stuck on this bad show.

Friday:

NUMB3RS reruns, hello.  Will never get enough of this show.  I'm so infatuated with Rob Morrow here.

Psych, thanks to Ms. Carrieoke.  Stupidly funny.  Dule Hill is awesome as the befuddled sidekick/straightman.  Harmless fun, perfect for relaxing after another fucking horrible week at work.

Saturday: A day of TV rest.

No More Charmed: Witches Say Goodbye.

I'm very sad to learn that Charmed has been cancelled and will not be carried over to that new whatever-it-was-called WB/UPN combo network next year. May 21 last episode.

I realize I may be the only person left in creation who enjoys this show. I can deal with that - thus the category I selected.
