OMG - this show is so fucking cute. Sean Astin narrates. It's a little hard to get used to Samwise Gamgee talking about the meerkats, but it's not too distracting. I love Animal Planet. I love meerkats. I really love that they've named one of the meerkats Zaphod. How awesome is that?
Windfall
Luke Perry = Really pretty good here. And Yummy.
Jason Gedrick = Also yummy. And morally conflicted! woot!
Their wives = Both good.
Stupid ex-con with icky (predictable) story-line = Maybe he'll get killed off?
Trailer lady = Awesome.
I think I like it! Definitely giving it a few more weeks to decide...
(Michelle, can you give me a category for this? Thank you much, madame...and for 'The Closer' as well...)
Coming up Monday night: new season of The Closer.
Last season, episode 1, I felt "Eh, kinda dumb." I had figured out the "mystery"' within the first 10 minutes or so... But I decided to watch it again the next week anyway...and it got good! In fact, by the end of last season I was an unabashed fan.
I'm hoping it's even better this season. With lots of Fritz! (YUM!)
So, on a tip from Laurel I recorded the second-to-last episode of the new Doctor Who show running on the Sci Fi channel. And then I let it sit there for a couple days because I was still afraid it would be disappointing.
Standard disclaimer: I watched about three seasons' worth of the Tom Baker shows when I was a kid. Enough to know a lot of the basic quirks and most of the backstory of the show. I tried watching the Peter Davison shows, but it just wasn't the same without that curly-haired scarf-wearing jelly-baby-loving wit. I know I'm not alone in that.
The new Doctor Who is pretty freakin' awesome. It follows the old formula wherein each episode stands alone yet may also be part of a larger plot line, and like before, it didn't take me long to figure out enough of what had happened before I started watching. Plus, Daleks! They look exactly the same and yet somehow they're totally creepy instead of campy.
Chris Eccelston makes an excellent Doctor. His face has just enough sneer in it to make you doubt if his intentions are really virtuous and true, while he delivers lines with impeccable timing. The Doctor's companions I'm not too sure about--I'll have to go back and watch the reruns to make sure.
But what I'm really excited about is the introduction of The Tenth Doctor, played by David Tennant. Yum.
If you missed Jon Stewart besting Bill Bennett on the Daily Show, follow the link to the video here. Stewart tore through all of Bennett's illogical ideas about gay marriage and family. It was beautiful. Why the Democrats can't be more like Stewart is really beyond me.
Actually, that's a good question. Why is it that a pop culture fake-news show is the only place to hear anyone from a liberal standpoint argue logically and effectively, without getting beat down by the likes of conservative blowhard pundits? Why is it that this simple, clear discourse seems to be incapable of happening in the political arena?
Who is it that has a crush on Logan from Veronica Mars? It's you isn't it, Carolyn.
Why is that boy so hot?
And we are still at least 60-90 minutes away from me being able to watch it (perhaps even 120 depending on how the rest of the evening goes). Oh the agony! The torture! It's ALL I can think about! :(
So I watched the first episode of the second season of Lost last night, partly because I wanted to see Desmond's first episode in the aftermath of the season finale, partly because we started this blog halfway through the Lost season, and partly because there was nothing else to do. (I'm also going through all the Veronica Mars episodes from the beginning as well. Can I just say the Beav really creeps me the hell out now? But that's for a different post.)
Some things that occurred to me:
1. Locke is so tragic. I mean, he was so gung-ho and ardent in his belief about this hatch and the island's purpose and blah-di-blah blah at the beginning of the season. So confident that the answers would be there. And what we got all season was a slow deterioration of one man's faith. It's really sad.
2. On the other hand, I got a little something out of Jack's umpteenth flashback this time around (though I did fast forward some parts). He meets Desmond, who says that maybe a miracle occurred and Jack did "fix" Sarah, and then Jack goes back to the hospital and lo, a miracle occurred...how does that not shake his scientific beliefs? How does that not cause him to bend a little? He is such a frustrating character.
3. There's a brief moment at the beginning of the episode, as the Castaways are standing around the hatch they just blew up, and Kate says something to Hurley, who is muttering the numbers like Leonard did, and then Hurley starts muttering something else that I can't remember anymore, only he calls himself an idiot and it was then that I thought, "Wait, that sounds like Dave talking." Not sure if I can bring that around to any sound conclusion, but I thought it was interesting.
4. Interesting also to watch Desmond in his scene with Jack, and how cordial and nosy he's being, knowing now that he's just come from a confrontation with Penny.
5. Still don't know what the hell is up with Walt appearing to Shannon. Unless it is really my first gut answer from way back, which is "astral projection," which fits with Miss Klugh's question to Michael about whether Walt ever appeared where he shouldn't have. But I'm not sure whether astral projection would be considered supernatural or not. And regardless, it will always remind me of this Lois Duncan novel I read as a teenager called Stranger with My Face, about a girl who finds her twin who can astral project but uses it to take over the girl's identity...freaky deaky stuff. I love Lois Duncan.
6. It's weird to think that this all happened before they met the Tailies.
7. Now I'm really curious as to who painted that mural Jack comes across when he enters the hatch. I wonder if that'll ever get picked up and answered. Not holding my breath.
8. The episode, the whole season, starts with that blasted beeping from the timer. Considering how pervasive it is throughout the season, to hear it again as a sort of bookend was both cool and slightly irritating.
9. The real question: who else is totally geeking out over the Lost Experience this summer? Because I'll be honest, another reason I watched the rerun was to see if they'd run a Hanso commercial.
