me from a to z

Stolen from Maryse.

Accent: Midwestern, but there's still quite a bit of Minnesotan in there, which I can amplify at will.

Breakfast or no breakfast: Brunch, actually. I tend to just drink coffee in the morning and then at about 11 or so I get hungry, so I'll have a nosh. It's rare that I wake up starving.

Chore I don't care for: all of them. Lately, though, I've started thinking about cleaning as a form of exercise, so I try to do a little bit every day--washing dishes, sweeping, dusting, mopping. I think, now, that cleaning the litter box--not daily maintenance, but really cleaning and changing the litter--would be my least favorite.

Dog or cat:
Hey, baby.
An old picture, but one of my favorites.

Essential electronics: Computer, phone, and if I'm being really honest, iPod, TV, DVR, DVD player. The last four I could certainly live and work without, but I am awfully fond of them.

Favorite cologne: Haven't worn perfume in years and years. Sometimes I will dot my wrists, but it feels like I'm playing dress up.

Gold or silver: Silver.

Handbag I carry most often: A Queen Bee creation from a few years ago--it's a red truckette like this one but in red, with a swirly stitch on it. I love the seatbelt strap. It's roomy enough for everything--knitting, book, wallet, keys. Most of my handbags are knitting bags--free swag from the old job.

Insomnia: Occasionally. In high-stress situations.

Job Title: Managing Editor. (sounds more impressive than it is.)

Kids: Does it read too desperate to answer "yes, please"?

Living arrangements: A decent-sized 1-bedroom in a kick-ass nabe.

Most admirable trait: A willingness to always see the best in people? This is a double-edged sword, of course.

Naughtiest childhood behavior: [redacted]

Overnight hospital stay: Haven't done that yet, but I was rushed to the emergency room at 3:00 AM once, with bronchitis so acute that I couldn't breathe. That was when we discovered I was allergic to everything.

Phobias: a mild case of acrophobia that I can usually overcome. Usually. I also have a slight fear of loud noises--fireworks, guns, sometimes thunderclaps--that really only means I stick my fingers in my ears when I think loud noises are imminent. And I have the occasional bout of claustrophobia.

Quote: "I wanna decide who lives and who dies." "Oh, I don't know..." -- MST3K

Don't know this one? Check it out:

Reason to smile:  I almost have my groove back?

Siblings: one younger brother, three older stepsisters

Time I wake up: anywhere between 7 and 8, these days. Quite a change from the months I was waking up at 5:30 every morning (see "insomnia," above).

Unusual skill or talent: If I'm working at home, I can tell you when it's 3:18 PM without using a clock. This would be the time at which all the kids from the nearby school make it over to the pizza place across the street. This is a seasonal skill.

Vegetable I refuse to eat: My years of being a vegetarian (now over) helped me figure out that I actually do like most vegetables, though if I can avoid it I won't eat cooked carrots or beets.

Worst habit: Laziness.

X-rays: Sure, why not? The latest was of my lungs, a little over a year ago, when I was trying to figure out why I wasn't breathing well. I'm happy to say that I am breathing perfectly fine, thank you.

Yummy stuff: Cheese.

Zoo animal I like most: Why, penguins, of course.

the world is unjust

I had the tiles to play "VICUNAS" and no place to put it.

maybe you need a balloon intestine!

(no one is going to get that quote.)

But anyway, yeah. There's a movie going around the country called Twisted: A Balloonamentary, about exactly what you think a movie with that title would be about: balloon twisters. Despite my ardent belief that the fusing of any noun with "-mentary" or "-versary" is a practice that ought to have been put to bed many years ago ("-tastic" is still OK), I think I need to see this flick.

Trailer here.

help me, please

I haven't used this category in a while, but it's appropriate today.

As of this morning, I have started speaking the words I am typing in IM out loud. As though I am actually speaking -- very slowly, and with typos -- to the people I am G-chatting with.

I just said all that out loud, too.

I seriously need to get out more.

so i seem to have a fabric stash now...

I need to learn how to sew soon. I now have four different fabrics lined up for summer skirts, and now that summer has officially started (I'm currently having an internal struggle over whether to turn on the AC. It's kinda humid out there, but it's not June yet. You know?) it's time to, like, make them.

Especially now that I own the coolest fabric I've seen in a long time. Reprodepot had a booth at this past Sunday's Brooklyn Flea, and the minute I saw this I had to have it:

Girlie_fabric

I guess it's a pin-up camouflage print, but I look at it and see the title sequences for Bond films. Minus the guns. I want this skirt NOW. But I can't make this the first skirt, in case I mess something up.

So to that end, I have other fabrics, also from Reprodepot, purchased from their sale page about a month or two ago:

Flower_fabrics

There seems to be a flower theme happening here.

Anyway, I have a question to ask of all the polycrafty people out there. What skirt-sewing book would you recommend for a total novice? I'm interested primarily in making A-line type skirts, with some variety (pencil, circle, etc.), will eventually want to know how to put in zippers and stuff. What else do I need to have handy before I start?

the temptation...so strong...

To put down the tiles for BOOGER.

Not enough points in it, though.

tired

Last night I went to a movie and fell asleep in the middle of it. Colleen tells me that I didn't miss much; it was more of a "mood piece."

This morning I have a meeting which I am dreading. I'm feeling all out of sorts, like I haven't slept (aside from the catnap in the movie theater), like I need a week or a month to get things in order. This is silly, because things are (mostly) in order, and it's only that I've had a long and eventful week and usually Fridays are more low-key and this one won't be.

At the end of the day I'm catching up with an old friend/former colleague in town for a conference. That should be fun and a good way to finish the week. And the weekend has filled up with fun plans with other friends. I'm feeling more like a social butterfly than I have in . . . years. It feels good, but I must remember to schedule time to sleep.

question to ponder

Why is it that song lyrics represented in graph or pie-chart form (or better still, Venn diagram or flow chart) make me laugh so hard I almost vomit?

And why is it that I am just finding out about GraphJam.com now?

Seriously. I didn't even come close to linking to everything that made me snort milk I didn't drink out of my nose.

fort greene dance party

Seems to be happening right outside my apartment.

Awesome.

ball 1

This is what one ball of mystery yarn yielded:

Datenightball1

I'm a little over halfway through the raglan increases, which I opted to do in yarnover fashion. I think this is going to be more shrug-like than cardigan-like, given how much yarn I have left. This is fine. Do you know how long it's been since I just sorta winged it? I'm having fun.
